11 – Vjing, Disc Jockeys have a new dimension to work with
Experimental, exciting and artistic-‘VJs’ are a new breed of visual artists. They utilize a combination of music and imagery and create a new form. Like any good disc jockey a VJ excels in live performance; they roll footage together along with the music and follow the rhythm, so it requires practice and a degree of skill. When VJs record their work or are not performing live they will take a more analogue approach, ditching conventional video editing software and simply working with what’s in front of them (similar to a Foley artist or a traditional photographer). It’s pretty groundbreaking stuff, and I think it is brilliant; the whole idea of really going back to the roots of creativity as opposed to a green screen and ‘Adobe After Effects’ appeals to me.
^ An example of VJing; DJ ‘Sleeper’ cuts together both music and footage at the same time during a performance to create live visual art.
